In the back of Cider Riot!, operating from a loft above barrels of honey, is the one-man publishing empire known as 33 Books Co.
Dave Selden, the Chief Janitor/President/Creator was kind enough to give me a tour of the space he’s shared with the cidery for 3 years and chat about considering consumption, the tasting tools he’s created and the challenge to curb the creative urge.33 Books Co. was born out of a need, a need to remember beer, lots of beer! In 2009 Dave Selden was a graphic designer with a beer blogging habit. While doing serious research for his blog at the Great American Beer Festival, Dave realized that he had a great memory for a few beers, but a festival featuring hundreds was overwhelming and notes were needed.
Thus, the birth of the pocket tasting journal! Designed to fit in a pocket, the tasting journals are functional and focused - right down to the ink used for printing. The ink for the beer journal contains a few drops of a Portland ale, the olive oil book has a few drops of California EVOO and the salumi book ink has drops of rendered pork fat from Yamhill County, Oregon. The inside cover has terms associated with each subject and an example of a completed flavor wheel. The flavor wheel components are customized for each book and designed to record flavor nuances at a glance. Other stats like producer, price and rating (with stars of course) are listed for recording while ingesting.
As someone who has personally faced down hundreds of cheeses at food shows and festivals, I love a good memory tool and as gift giver I appreciate how Dave’s focus is reflected and aligns with passions people have for eating and drinking! Expanding his selection is done by instinct and enthusiast customer demand, in a busy year between 4 to 5 books have been researched, and created. Journals can also be customized, stamped with a company logo, personal event or party theme.
Ranging from maps, tasting journals, logbooks for cheese & beer making and tasting kits which contain a guided experience in a box – all are amazing presents or additions to a gift basket!
